Choosing the Best Belgian City for a Distribution Center

Antwerp, Brussels, Liège and Ghent: comparative operational snapshot

Antwerp combines direct deepwater port access with dense road and rail links, giving distribution centers fast turnaround for container freight and bulk shipments bound for the Benelux and North-West Europe. Brussels adds immediate access to Brussels Airport and proximity to EU institutions, favoring high-value, time-sensitive cargo and last-mile distribution. Liège is optimized for air-freight express logistics and multimodal cross-dock operations due to its 24/7 airport hub and freight-friendly zoning, while Ghent presents a lower-cost alternative with modern inland port facilities and close rail-to-sea connections.

Key logistics criteria for siting a distribution center

When selecting a Belgian city for a distribution center, operators prioritize a combination of physical infrastructure and regulatory environment. The essential criteria are:

• Port and airport proximity — reduces sea-to-air and sea-to-road transfer times for international shipments.
• Road and rail connectivity — ensures efficient container trucking, pallet distribution and intermodal transfers.
• Zoning and permitting — local land-use policy affects cross-dock operations, warehousing hours and environmental compliance.
• Labor availability and skill mix — impacts handling of e-commerce parcels, palletized cargo and value-added services.
• Cost structure — land rents, property taxes and local incentives shape total landed cost for logistics operations.

Regional strengths and operational implications

Antwerp is the natural choice for large-scale container transport operations, intermodal yards and bonded warehouses. Its integration into major north-south and east-west corridors shortens truck haulage time to Germany, France and the UK, enabling high-frequency container trucking rotations and lower inventory lead times.

Brussels attracts distribution centers focused on e-commerce fulfillment, pharmaceutical distribution and high-value goods. The city’s connectivity to road networks and immediate access to Brussels Airport allow for fast courier and express shipments across Europe.

Liège is preferred by users of express air freight and 24/7 logistics operations. Liège Airport’s cargo-friendly operations enable round-the-clock handling of time-sensitive freight, beneficial for high-turnover cartons and palletized shipments that require rapid dispatch.

Ghent offers competitive land and facility costs while maintaining efficient access to the Port of Ghent and hinterland rail links. This balances lower operational expenses with reliable container and pallet distribution for manufacturing supply chains in Flanders.

Comparative table: practical decision factors

City	Primary advantage	Best for	Connectivity	Cost profile
Antwerp	Deepwater port, container throughput	Container freight, bonded warehousing	Strong sea-rail-road	Premium for port-adjacent sites
Brussels	Airport access, central EU market reach	Express parcels, high-value goods	Excellent road links	High urban costs
Liège	24/7 cargo airport, multimodal	Air freight, fast-moving consumer goods	Good road and rail	Moderate to high (airport premium)
Ghent	Inland port, competitive land	Manufacturing supply chains, regional distribution	Good rail-to-sea	Lower than Antwerp/Brussels

Operational models and zoning considerations

Distribution center operators typically adopt one of several models depending on city attributes: cross-dock hubs focusing on fast throughput; regional distribution centers (RDC) holding safety stock; or value-added logistics (VAL) hubs providing light assembly and kitting. Local zoning rules in Belgian municipalities influence allowable operating hours, emissions controls and truck movement restrictions—factors that change total cost of ownership and service reliability.

Checklist for carriers and logistics planners

• Map expected inbound modes (sea, air, road, rail) to reduce unnecessary container transport legs.
• Estimate average dwell times at port/airport and include customs clearance variability in service level agreements.
• Factor in last-mile density for parcel and pallet distribution: urban consolidation centers lower per-delivery costs.
• Assess local labor pools for night and weekend shifts if 24/7 operations are planned.
• Analyze total landed costs, not just warehousing rent—include haulage, container trucking, and cross-dock fees.

How location choice affects supply-chain KPIs

Choosing the right Belgian city impacts fill rates, transit time variability, inventory carrying costs and delivery reliability. For example, an Antwerp-based RDC reduces sea-to-warehouse lead time for imported container freight, whereas a Brussels facility can cut final-mile transit for city-center deliveries. Liège can reduce lead times for air-dependent SKUs, and Ghent reduces per-pallet storage cost for industrial customers.

Optional fact: Belgium’s multimodal infrastructure makes it one of the most connected logistics environments in Europe, encouraging consolidation of European distribution strategies around a few high-capacity hubs.

GetTransport's role: enabling carrier income and operational flexibility

GetTransport offers technology and marketplace functionality that helps carriers influence their income through selective order acceptance, dynamic pricing and access to diverse freight lanes across Belgium and beyond. By presenting verified container freight requests and consolidating opportunities from shippers, the platform reduces dependence on single large customers and enables carriers to choose the most profitable orders. Features such as route matching, real-time notifications and integrated documentation support faster turnaround, optimizing fleet utilization for container trucking, pallet delivery and bulky cargo haulage.

Benefits for small and medium carriers

Carriers can increase utilization rates by accepting short-haul container trips into Antwerp or Ghent, or specialized express loads into Liège and Brussels. The platform’s transparent pricing and review system helps carriers negotiate better margins and avoid idle time, while routing tools guide drivers to the most efficient pickup and drop-off sequences—critical for courier, parcel and palletized freight in dense urban and port-adjacent zones.

Risk and compliance checklist for Belgian distribution centers

• Confirm customs bonded status and VAT handling for cross-border shipments.
• Verify environmental permits for emissions and noise if operating near residential areas.
• Ensure compliance with EU transport regulations for driver hours, ADR for dangerous goods, and vehicle weight limits.
• Plan for contingency capacity during peak seasons and port congestion.

Highlight: integrating compliance checks into site selection avoids costly retrofits and operational interruptions.

The most important elements to weigh are access to multimodal infrastructure, operating cost balance, zoning flexibility and workforce availability—each of which directly affects the competitiveness of container transport, freight forwarding and regional distribution strategies.
