Transporting Household Appliances During Moves

Large household appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines, and freezers typically weigh between 60 kg and 150 kg and therefore require dedicated handling protocols, vehicle capacities, and securing methods to avoid damage and delays during relocation.

Pre-move assessment: measurements, weight, and route planning

Before scheduling transport, record the external dimensions (height, width, depth), weight, and any protruding parts (handles, hoses, compressors). Verify doorway, hallway, elevator, and stair clearances at both origin and destination. For multi-story buildings, confirm stairwell widths and whether a lift or crane service is necessary; cranes and exterior lifts must be coordinated with local authorities for permits and street closure time windows.

Packing materials and protective solutions

Use the original manufacturer packaging when available. If original boxes are not an option, apply the following protective measures:

• Corner protectors and heavy-duty foam to absorb impact.
• Moving blankets and shrink wrap to guard finishes and prevent dust ingress.
• Rigid cardboard panels to distribute pressure across large surfaces.
• Internal immobilization for appliances with loose internal components (e.g., drum locks for washing machines).

Disconnecting and securing internal systems

Ensure all fluids are drained per manufacturer recommendations: refrigerators and freezers should be defrosted and dried 24–48 hours before transport; washing machines must have drum stabilizers installed or bolts secured to prevent internal damage. Label and cap any open ports for gas, water, and refrigerant lines, and secure cords and hoses so they cannot snag during loading.

Choosing the right transport: vehicle types and load plans

Selection of transport depends on weight, size, and fragility. Typical options include:

• Small box trucks (3–7.5 tonnes) — suitable for a few appliances plus household goods.
• Medium trucks (7.5–12 tonnes) — optimal for 1–3 large appliances and bulky furniture.
• Large curtain-side or box trucks (12+ tonnes) — used when moving multiple large appliances or full-house relocations.

Vehicle Type	Usual Load Capacity	Best Use Case
Small box truck	1–2 appliances (up to 2 m³)	City moves, narrow streets
Medium truck	2–4 appliances (2–6 m³)	Suburban relocations, multi-appliance moves
Large box/curtain-side	4+ appliances (6+ m³)	Intercity and full-house moves

Load planning and securing loads

Position heavy appliances low and centered to maintain the vehicle’s center of gravity. Use ratchet straps, load bars, and anti-slip mats to prevent movement. For long hauls, place appliances against the bulkhead and interlock palletized loads where possible. Document load positions with photographs and a cargo checklist to streamline unloading and claims handling if necessary.

Handling risks: damage prevention and insurance

Key risks include tipping, water ingress, vibration damage, and thermal shocks (for refrigeration equipment). Mitigation requires both mechanical and contractual measures:

• Specify shock- and tilt-indicating devices for fragile or condition-sensitive items.
• Purchase transport insurance or check carrier liability limits; appliance manufacturers’ warranties rarely cover transit damage.
• Include clear incoterms/contractual clauses in the transport contract that define liability for pre-existing defects, transit damage, and delayed deliveries.

Regulatory and compliance considerations

When transporting appliances that contain refrigerants or batteries, comply with local and international regulations on hazardous goods. For cross-border moves, prepare customs documentation for household goods, including inventories and proof of ownership where required. In some jurisdictions, disposal of appliance fluids must be certified; include this cost in the move estimate when applicable.

Packing checklist for common appliances

Use this checklist to ensure consistent preparation across moves:

• Refrigerator/Freezer: empty, defrosted, dried, doors secured, compressor secured.
• Washing Machine: water drained, drum locked, hoses capped and bundled.
• Dishwasher: disconnected from supply, drainage line sealed, inner racks secured.
• Oven/Range: gas disconnected by a licensed technician if required; gas valves capped.

Operational tips for carriers and logistics coordinators

Improve reliability and reduce damage claims by standardizing appliance move protocols: pre-move surveys, professional disconnect/reconnect services, and calibrated handling equipment. Integrate a digital checklist and photo evidence into the carrier’s delivery management system to accelerate claims resolution and provide transparency for clients.

Optional industry insight: Appliance moves often generate higher per-item handling costs due to size and weight. Many logistics providers report that time spent on securement and entry/egress planning can increase labor costs by 20–40% compared to average small-item moves, which highlights the need for accurate quotes and resource allocation.
