Overview of Vietjet’s New Manila to Ho Chi Minh Air Service
Vietjet has inaugurated a direct air route connecting Manila and Ho Chi Minh City, marking its official entry into the Philippine aviation market. This new service, operating five times per week, broadens accessibility between the Philippines and Vietnam, fostering closer ties across tourism, culture, and business sectors.
Historical Context: Two Decades of Evolving Southeast Asian Air Connectivity
Over the past twenty years, Southeast Asia’s aviation landscape has undergone significant transformation. The gradual liberalization of air services and growing economic integration have allowed LCCs (Low-Cost Carriers) such as Vietjet to expand their footprints throughout the region. Historically, air routes connecting major commercial hubs like Manila and Ho Chi Minh City were limited, often monopolized by legacy carriers. The emergence of new carriers offering competitive pricing and increased frequencies has shifted this paradigm, encouraging greater mobility both for passengers and, indirectly, for cargo and logistics flows.
Air Connectivity and Its Broader Impact on Logistics
The establishment of direct flights plays a crucial role beyond just passenger transport—it directly impacts freight carriers and logistics companies operating within the region. Improved route availability can lead to enhanced air cargo capacity, reducing transit times for perishable goods and high-value shipments. For freight carriers, particularly those specializing in container transport and courier services, new flight offerings translate into diverse opportunities for fast and reliable freight delivery between these key urban centers.
Current Developments and Implications for Freight Carriers
The Manila-Ho Chi Minh route, scheduled for early-morning departures from Manila and late-night return trips from Ho Chi Minh City on selected weekdays, integrates well with existing regional transport rhythms. This schedule supports both business travelers and cargo operators who require timely and frequent service. The resulting effect is a potential increase in demand for container trucking, pallet shipments, and bulky goods transportation linked to the enhanced flow of goods between the two cities.

In celebration of the new route and the approaching holiday travel season, Vietjet has initiated a “Thank Yourself” promotional campaign. This offer includes significant discounts, such as 100% off the base fare in the Economy class, complimentary checked baggage, and free eSIM data packages for select international travelers, making both passenger and small cargo transport more accessible and affordable.
Statistical Context: Passenger and Cargo Flows in Manila and Ho Chi Minh City
Manila and Ho Chi Minh City rank among the most populous urban centers in Southeast Asia, with populations exceeding 24 million and 15 million respectively. Both serve as vital economic and cultural hubs for the Philippines and Vietnam. The direct flight path between these metropolitan areas supports a dynamic corridor, which in 2024 saw increasing passenger volumes along with steady growth in air cargo shipments driven by e-commerce and manufacturing exports.
Regional Passenger Traffic and Freight Growth
In 2023, the passenger traffic for flights between the two cities showed an annual growth projection of 7%.
Air cargo tonnage related to the corridor increased by approximately 5%, with significant contributions from electronics and textiles.
New direct routes are expected to further catalyze freight distribution efficiency, including container freight and palletized cargo.
